A short trip that focuses on bird watching and bird photography. The Manu biosphere reserve has the highest diversity of life on earth and is one of the most important conservation units in the world. If you were to choose the best place for a birding trip in the world, this must surely be in the top ten! The beauty of this trip is the variety of habitats visited, ranging from orchid-laden cloud-forest where 13 species of monkey abound and Giant otters still exist in the ox-bow lakes.
Birding Manu 10-Days Tour
Today we leave at 5:30 am from the hotel heading towards the Huacarpay lake which will take approximately 45 minutes where we can see the endemic Bearded Mountaineer (Oreonympha nobilis) that is a special hummingbird found in the area. It is not the only hummingbird you can see in the region of Cusco but it does not exist in other parts of the world. We can also observe many other types of birds such as: Plumbeous rail (Pardirallus sanguinolentus), Cinnamon teal (Anas cyanoptera), Puna teal (Anas puna), Yellow billed pintail (Anas georgica), White tufted grebe (Rollandia rolland),Cinereous harrier (Circus cinereus), Black chested buzzard Eagle (Geranoaetus melanoleucus), Streak fronted thornbird (Phacellodomus striaticeps), Many colored rush tyrant (Tachuris rubrigastra), Rusty fronted canastero (Asthenes ottonis), and Creamy crested spinetail (Cranioleuca albicapilla), which are also an endemic birds, and many others; afterwards, we will have a quick breakfast and then continue looking for more birds around the lake. Later we will take our car and depart toward Manu. Later we arrive in the highest part of the tour to have lunch at the entrance of the national park of Manu (3565masl.) From here we will enter the cloud forest to see tanagers hummingbirds, antpittas, tyranulets, flycatchers, toucans and toucanets and many other bird species. We will arrive to our lodge Huayquecha around 4:30pm. At night before sleep we will look for Swallow tailed nightjars.
Today we will head to Cock of the Rock lodge. In the way we will search birds such as: Golden collared tanager (Iridosornis jelskii),Grass green Tanager (Chlorornis riefferii), Scaled metaltail (Metallura aeneocauda), Mountain Cacique (Cacicus chrysonotus), white collared jay (Cyanolyca viridicyanus), Barred parakeet (Bolborhynchus lineola), Barred fruiteater (Pipreola arcuata), Band tailed fruiteater (Pipreola intermedia), Marcapata Spinetail (Cranioleuca marcapatae), Red and white antpitta (Grallaria erythroleuca), Blue Banded Toucanet (Aulacorhynchus coeruleicinctis), Hooded Mountain Tanager (Buthraupis montana), Black and Chestnut Eagle (Spizaetus isidori), Black solitary Eagle (Buteogallus solitarius), White throated Antpitta (Grallaria albigula), Slaty Tanager (Creurgops dentatus),Slaty Backed Chat tyrant (Ochthoeca cinnamomeiventris), Fulvous Wren (Cinnycerthia fulva), Chestnut crested Cotinga (Ampelion rufaxilla), Crested Quetzal (Pharomachrus antisianus),Golden Headed Quetzal (Pharomachrus auriceps), Black Streaked Puffbird (Malacoptila fulvogularis),Yellow Throated Tanager (Iridosornis analis), Buff Breasted Mountain Tanager (Dubusia taeniata),Superciliary Hemispingus (Hemispingus superciliaris) and many more. This night we will look for Rufous-bellied Nighthawk (Lurocalis rufiventris).
Today we will visit the “Lek” of the Peruvian National Bird called the Andean Cock of the Rock we will have to start the tour very early in the morning. At the lek we can see the “Gallito de las Rocas” displaying; besides the Andean Cock of the Rock we can also see species like: White crowned Tapaculo (Scytalopus atratus), Yungas Manakin (Chiroxiphia boliviana),Crested Quetzal (Pharomachrus antisianus), Versicolored Barbet (Eubucco versicolor), Orange Eared Tanager (Chlorochrysa calliparaea), Highland Motmot (Momotus aequatorialis), and many more. After the morning activity we will return to the lodge for breakfast then go out for a walk along a trail to see more birds and such as: Slaty Gnateater (Conopophaga ardesiaca), Chestnut breasted Wren (Cyphorhinus thoracicus), Cinnamon faced Tyranulet (Phylloscartes parkeri), Spotted Nightingale Thrush (Catharus dryas), Amazonian Ambrella Bird (Cephalopterus ornatus), Tyrannine Woodcreeper (Dendrocincla tyrannina), Masked Trogon (Trogon personatus), Crimson Bellied Woodpecker (Campephilus haematogaster), Black Streaked puffbird (Malacoptila fulvogularis), Paradise Tanager (Tangara chilensis), Saffron Crowned Tanager (Tangara xanthocephala), Golden Tanager (Tangara arthus), Brown Tinamou (Crypturellus obsoletus), and possibly monkeys. Later we will return to the lodge for lunch, around the lodge we have flowers that attacks hummingbirds; in total we will be able to see around 13 species of them: Booted Racket Tail (Ocreatus underwoodii), Wire crested Thorntail (Discosura popelairii), Gree Hermit (Phaethornis guy), Buff Tailed Sicklebill (Eutoxeres condamini), Many Spotted Hummingbird (Taphrospilus hypostictus), Violet Fronted Brilliant (Taphrospilus hypostictus),White Bellied Woodstar (Chaetocercus mulsant),Peruvian Piedtail (Phlogophilus harterti), long Tailed Sylph (Aglaiocercus kingi), Wedge Billed Hummingbird (Schistes geoffroyi),Speckled Hummingbird (Adelomyia melanogenys),Fawn Breasted Brilliant (Heliodoxa rubinoides), and common Sparkling Violetear (Colibri coruscans), are the species of humming birds we can see. After lunch we will take another walk along the road to see the (Uropsalis lyra) and the Rufescent Screech Owl (Megascops ingens). Late in the afternoon we will return to the lodge to have dinner.
In the morning after breakfast, we will drive towards Pilcopata, in the way we will have chances to observe birds like the Ornate flycatcher (Myiotriccus ornatus), Booted-racket Tail, Lanceolated monklet (Micromonacha lanceolata), Peruvian piedtail (Phlogophilus harterti), Black-backed tody flycatcher (Poecilotriccus pulchellus), Black-faced tanager (Schistochlamys melanopis), Blue-headed Macaw (Primolius couloni), Chestnut-fronted Macaw (Ara severus), Fiery capped Manakin (Machaeropterus pyrocephalus), White-eyed parakeet (Psittacara leucophthalma), Chestnut-backed Antshrike (Thamnophilus palliatus), Golden Tanager (Tangara arthus), Orange eared Tanager (Chlorochrysa calliparaea), Black solitary eagle (Buteogallus solitarius), and much more. Later we will enter the Villa Carmen Lodge, this area will provide a different selection of trails with special habitats in the southeast of South America “Bambo” where many specialties are restricted to this habitat and make bird watching so special around Manu National Park. After breakfast we’ll explore some of the trails along the road to spot rainforest birds such as the Southern Scrub-Flycatcher, Brownish-headed Antbird or even Sapphire Quail-Dove or Grey Tinamou, White-browed Hermit , other possibilities include Black and Spot-backed Antbird, Ringed Antpipit, and Round-tailed Manakin, Slender-billed Xenops, Fine-barred Piculet, Black-faced Antthrush, Amazonian Antpitta, Dark-breasted Spinetail, Speckled Spinetail, Red-billed Tyrannulet, Black-banded Woodcreeper . In the afternoon, we will continue to Atalaya at 500m and look for specialties such as Amazonian Umbrellabird, Peruvian Piedtail, Black streaked Puffbird, Russet Antshrike, and Black-backed Tody-Flycatcher. White-cheeked Tody-Tyrant and sightings of Black-capped Tinamou are regularly recorded. Special hummers visiting include Rufous-crested Coquette, Koepcke´s Hermit, Gould’s Jewelfront, Gray-breasted Sabrewing, White-necked Jacobin, Golden-tailed Sapphire, Scaly-naped Parrot, and various species of tanagers. After this, we will continue to the Mirador Atalaya for lunch and a break before birding for the rest of the afternoon. We’ll spot the Rufous-breasted Wood-Quail, Golden-crowned Flycatcher, White-winged Tanager, Yellow-throated Bush Tanager, and many more.
Some of the hummingbirds we’ll see are the Wire-crested Thorntail, Many-spotted Hummingbird, Violet-fronted Brilliant, White-bellied Woodstar, and Long-tailed Sylph. Rufous crested coquette (Lophornis delattrei), Violet headed hummingbird (Klais guimeti), Golden-tailed sapphire (Chrysuronia none), Koepcke’s Hermit (phaethornis koepckeae), Amethyst woodstar (Calliphlox amethystina), Rufous webbed Brilliant (Heliodoxa branickii), and Gould’s jewelfront (Heliodoxa aurescens). overnight at Pilcopata Lodge.

Today we will reach Salvacion road to enter the Machuhuasi lagoon, along the trails we can see: Amazonian Antpitta (Hylopezus berlepschi), Blue-headed macaw (Primolius colony), Great Tinamou (Tinamus major), Spot back antbird (Myrmeciza exsul), Hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin), Sungrebe (Heliornis fulica), Chestnut-capped puffbird (Bucco macrodactylus), among other birds. After dinner, we will return to the trail to observe owls such as Tawny-bellied screech owl (Megascops watsonii), Long-tailed potoo (Nyctibius aethereus), Black-banded owl (Strix huhula), Great potoo (Nyctibius grandis), Solitary Sandpipers, Collared Plovers, Large-billed and Yellow-billed Terns, Black Skimmers, and macaws.

After breakfast, we will take our car to return to Manu Road and continue to Cusco. The landscape will change as we climb and move through the cloud forests and elves’ forests. We’ll have a box lunch along the way as we move through the magical landscape toward Cusco. The trip continues to Tambopata with a flight from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado. Our car will be waiting for you at the airport, from where you and your guide will be transferred to the river dock from where we will take a boat to our lodge, where you will stay.

Get ready for an unforgettable day! Today we will visit an excellent lake in the Amazon, the Sandoval Lake.
A thirty-minute boat ride down the river and a forty-five-minute walk through the forest lead us to an oxbow lake full of life, we will be spent canoeing the lake, observing oxbow lake animal life from the water. We may encounter an Agami Heron or a Sungrebe and Brown Capuchin Monkeys are usually feeding on fruits nearby. Specially constructed piers that jut out into the lake enable us to look for a family of Giant Otters that live here. These, the world’s largest freshwater carnivores, remain common only in Tambopata, having been hunted to extinction throughout most of their former range. Each animal consumes between 4 and 5 kilos of fish daily and often they can be seen eating large fish on logs at the lakeside.
We return to the lodge where, after lunch and a rest, we take a short walk to the canopy tower. Up thirty meters in the canopy, we see mixed-species flocks of tanagers, flycatchers, woodcreepers, foliage-gleaners, woodpeckers, dacnis, and soaring raptors. The rest of the day will be spent walking the trails in the area in search of some of the 13 species of monkeys found in the forest here. Your guide will explain some of the basics of rainforest ecosystems and point out some of the medicinal plants of the area used by local, indigenous groups. Guans, Curassows, Chachalacas as well as Rose-fronted and Rock Parakeets and Dusky-billed Parrotlet. After this exciting adventure, we will go back to our Lodge to take a deserved rest after a delicious dinner. Overnight at the Sandoval Lake Lodge.

After breakfast, we will return to Puerto Maldonado from where you will be transferred to the Tambopata Inn Lodge, where you will stay. You will have a delicious lunch and in the afternoon your guide and you will be birding around the lodge. nocturnal walk in the evening in search for nocturnal species.

Early in the morning we sail upstream on Tambopata River, after 1.5 hours about boat ride we get the biggest Macaw clay lick in the world, this is a clay Lick wall on the riverside, where different species of parrots and macaws come down each morning. The Parakeets, Amazon Parrot, the Blue headed Parrot, Chestnut fronted Macaw. In here you can see the three big ARAS together, eating the clay, Red-and-Green, Blue-and-Yellow, and Scarlet Macaw and of course some other nice birds, along the river you have a chance for the enigmatic jaguar and some other wildlife: Capybara biggest rodent, monkeys and more.
At mid-day after lunch, you will be returning to Puerto Maldonado and transferred to the airport, for your flight to Lima and connections.
